Spend the day narrow winding streets of the World Heritage site of Fort Galle. The most enjoyable way stroll takes one past the old Dutch Church, the Governor’s House, the Spice Warehouses, the Court Square, the Kacheri, the Lighthouse and then on to the Seawall and Ramparts. Climb to the highest bastions of the Fort for views across the town of Galle to St. Aloysius Cathedral, the Galle International Cricket Ground and the Port. Singharaja Forest, one of the least disturbed rain forests in the world. The forest covers an extent of approximately 11,000 hectares. The reserve ranges from 200m to 1,300m in height. Located somewhat south west in the low land wet zone. Singharaja was declared as a world heritage site in 1989. When it comes to playground bragging rights, there can’t be too many things that can top watching the massive tail fluke of a 100ft blue whale disappear into the depths of the Indian Ocean. Whale-watching trips off Mirissa, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, offer a very good chance of spotting these jaw-dropping cetaceans, just an hour or so from shore.
The Madu River is a beautiful paradise of nature mixed with sea water. This river is found on your way to Galle in the Southern Province. Both banks of the river are covered with mangroves and various species of plants. You can see beautiful small islands spread over the area. While on this boat safari, make sure you visit the temple in the island of ‘Koth Duwa’. It is home to the tall Buddha statue in a standing posture. Another must do when visiting the islands, is to experience the peeling of cinnamon bark.
